Language
Expressive Language
The ability to verbally express wants, needs, and ideas through spoken language. Expressive language allows us to communicate with others through oral language.
Receptive Language
The ability to understand spoken language and process its meaning. Receptive language allows us to listen to what others are communicating and make meaning from it.
Pragmatic Language
“Social communication is the use of language in social contexts. It encompasses social interaction, social cognition, pragmatics, and language processing. Social communication skills include the ability to vary speech style, take the perspective of others, understand and appropriately use the rules for verbal and nonverbal communication, and use the structural aspects of language (e.g., vocabulary, syntax, and phonology) to accomplish these goals” (ASHA, 2022).
